The Model Y was also ranked as the sixth worst vehicle overall, with the Hyundai Venue taking the top spot
According to a recent study based on data from the US Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), Tesla vehicles are said to have the highest fatal accident rate among all other car brands in the USA.
The study is said to have been conducted on car model years between 2018 and 2022 and focused on crashes between 2017 and 2022, which resulted in occupant fatalities. Tesla vehicles topped the list with a fatal crash rate of 5.6 per billion miles driven. Kia and Buick came in second and third with fatal crash rates of 5.5 and 4.8, respectively. The average fatal crash rate for all cars in the USA was 2.8 per billion miles driven.
Going a bit deeper, the study stated how the Tesla Model S had a fatal crash rate of 5.8 per billion miles driven, while the Tesla Model Y, which is currently the best-selling car in the world, had a fatal crash rate of 10.6—four times the average. The Model Y was also ranked as the sixth worst vehicle overall, with the Hyundai Venue taking the top spot, having a fatal crash rate of 13.9.
Having said that, the study did clarify that the results do not indicate that Tesla's are inherently unsafe or have any design flaws. The reason for the high fatality rate, as per Karl Brauer, Executive Analyst, iSeeCars, is, "The models on this list likely reflect a combination of driver behaviour and driving conditions, leading to increased crashes and fatalities."
