Popular tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD, has revealed that he has sold his matte black Tesla Cybertruck. When MKBHD announced this decision, it angered a lot of Tesla fans, who speculated several reasons behind this move, including some claiming that MKBHD has never been fully pro-Cybertruck. One Cybertruck fan, Diligentium, offered his explanation, writing… “You may recall Marques was also a late convert to the Cybertruck. Seems his ambivalence eventually resolved in the other direction.” Another X user, The SafeMoon Guy, points to the Cybertruck picture MKBHD shared announcing he had sold the vehicle and writes… “Look at the tire tread. He put over 20,000 miles on this and didn’t want to buy new tires.” With all these theories going around, MKBHD luckily addressed both these assumptions. For the person who claimed MKBHD was a late convert to the Cybertruck, the tech YouTuber responds, writing… “You may recall I was one of the earliest to review the Cybertruck, called it iconic, and took a lot of heat for not being harsh enough on it.” And for the guy who thought MKBHD had put 20,000 miles on his Cybertruck, the tech YouTuber writes back that he has ridden the all-electric truck “less than 5K miles.” So, if he was not a late convert or had already put too many miles on the vehicle, why did Marques sell his Cybertruck? An X user, Brian G, asked this exact question, writing, “I wonder why MKBHD sold his Cybertruck.” In response, the tech YouTuber says, long story short, he prefers his Rivian R1T over the Cybertruck, writing, “TL;DR I like the Rivian better.” TL;DR I like the Rivian better — Marques Brownlee (@MKBHD) December 29, 2024 When he bought his Cybertruck, MKBHD said he was looking for the best truck to put a video rig on, especially one that could be used to film other car footage. However, after 8 months, it appears Marques has found the Rivian better suited for this task than the Cybertruck. After finding out about MHBHD’s decision to go with the Rivian over the Cybertruck, unhappy Tesla fans quickly pointed out that the Rivian does not come with Tesla’s full self-driving software. A Tesla fan, Nicholas J. Nicastro, rather sarcastically asks, “Do you like how the Rivian drives itself better or that it’s safer?” Many Tesla owners swear by the full self-driving software and say they will never drive another car without similar functionality. However, MKBHD disagrees, saying FSD is not the main buying decision for regular individuals. The tech YouTuber writes… “We all know FSD is better than Rivian's, but people on this site act like it's the #1 buying factor for regular people when it's not.” Another X user seconds MKBHD’s point, saying that FSD is not the be-all and end-all when comparing two vehicles. The person adds that many people are switching from a Tesla Model X to the Rivian R1S 3-row full-sized SUV because the latter better fits their needs. This person writes… “Owners I know that are trading in their Tesla Model X for the Rivian R1S really like having an actual SUV for their families. FSD is not a concern for them. Tesla messed up by not making an actual SUV. Maybe In 2025.” MKBHD agrees and gives free advice to the EV maker, writing, “Tesla could crush with an R1S-shaped 3-row SUV.” This is all interesting; however, the biggest question we all want to know is how much money MKBHD lost when he sold his Cybertruck. Unfortunately, the YouTuber did not reveal this number. However, we can make a good assumption by comparing it to similar Cybertrucks that have recently sold on the secondary market. Marques bought his truck back in April, and he chose to go with the most expensive Foundation Series Cybertruck Cyberbeast, which has a $120,000 starting price. Add to this New Jersey’s 6.625% state vehicle sales tax, which is MKBHD’s home state, Tesla’s $2,500 doc and destination fee, and other fees. All in, Marques has spent over $130,000 to purchase the truck. However, once he took delivery, MKBHD has added a matte black wrap to his Cybertruck, which cost at least another $5,000 to $8,000. Tallying everything together, it means MKBHD has spent nearly $140,000 on his now-sold Cybertruck. As I have said, MKBHD has not revealed how much he sold his Cybertruck; however, given similar sales recently, I would assume he sold it for around $90,000—plus or minus $5,000. This brings MKBHD’s loss on his Cybertruck to around $50,000. I don’t know about you, but I think a $50,000 loss on an 8-month-old vehicle with less than 5,000 miles is a lot.
