Owners of iPhones and Android phones that support sending text messages via satellite can now do so in Los Angeles thanks to a partnership between Starlink and T-Mobile.
The move means that people dealing with the devastating LA fires can communicate with others even when cell towers are no longer available.
The news was announced via a post on the X account of SpaceX, the company behind Starlink.
For those in the Los Angeles area, the @Starlink team and @TMobile have enabled basic texting (SMS) through our Direct to Cell satellites. You can now text loved ones, text 911 and receive emergency alerts.
The feature uses a direct connection to a Starlink satellite rather than the traditional cell network and has the potential to save lives when used in parts of the world where no cell services are available. In instances such as natural disasters, the same feature can ensure that people remain connected when normal methods of communication have been taken out of action.
The LA fires have so far claimed at least 10 people and destroyed houses and more across a huge area, and firefighters continue to struggle to get those fires under control. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that the company will be donating money to assist in relief efforts.
