A woman in Acadiana fell victim to a catfishing scam and sent thousands of dollars to a scammer pretending to be Billionaire Ellon Musk.
KLFY News 10 reported that the woman thought she was talking to the billionaire online and reportedly sent up to $60,000 to someone who was NOT Ellon Musk. This new scam is being produced with the use of Artificial Intelligence, where the scammer uses the image and voice of someone to make the person they're talking to believe that they are actually in conversation with a celebrity or with someone of notoriety.

In this case, News 10 reports the conversation started on the Threads platform, and then moved into video conversations.
Hilda Holland spoke to KLFY News 10 about her friend who was scammed. She explained that the money sent to the scammer was in the form of gift cards, so it could not be retrieved after it was sent.
As part of this scam, the man posing as Elon Musk told Holland's friend that he was going to send her a Tesla car and even asked for her money to buy pizza for those who work at his company, X, formerly known as Twitter.
The poser even told the local woman that the money he was sending her couldn't reach her because the FedEx truck that had her check got into an accident. The scammer said she would have to pay $1,500 for the damage to the truck.

The victim was reportedly buying so many gift cards at Home Depot stores in Alexandria, Opelousas, and Lafayette the employees caught on to what could be happening and they stopped selling the gift cards to her.
We share this with you so that you are aware of this new scam and we hope that you will share this with others.
If something sent to you seems to be too good it is likely a scam, and if the person you think you are talking to is demanding and does not want to meet in person, that should be a red flag and you should end all forms of communication.
Again, you should never send money to anyone you do not know, and with the use of AI now, anyone can pretend to be someone they are not. Slow down and evaluate everything if you are approached online.
