Updated: RELATED: NASA's 2 stuck astronauts face more time in space with return delayed until at least late March
In a post on X Tuesday, Musk blamed former President Joe Biden and his administration for the delay in the astronauts' return, claiming the two were left "stranded."
"The @POTUS has asked @SpaceX to bring home the 2 astronauts stranded on the @Space_Station as soon as possible. We will do so. Terrible that the Biden administration left them there so long," Musk's post read.
President Trump reiterated Musk's statement with his own post on Truth Social, saying the two astronauts were "virtually abandoned."
"I have just asked Elon Musk and @SpaceX to “go get” the 2 brave astronauts who have been virtually abandoned in space by the Biden Administration. They have been waiting for many months on @Space Station. Elon will soon be on his way. Hopefully, all will be safe. Good luck Elon!!!" Trump's post read.
Musk and Trump did not say if Williams and Wilmore would return home sooner than the late-March timeframe NASA provided for the ISS crew swap that was planned before Trump took office. Musk did not provide an update on the status of the delayed SpaceX Dragon capsule.
NASA said Wednesday it was working to return the two home "as soon as practical."
"NASA and SpaceX are expeditiously working to safely return the agency’s SpaceX Crew-9 astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore as soon as practical, while also preparing for the launch of Crew-10 to complete a handover between expeditions," NASA said.
Why have they been in space so long?
Williams and Wilmore have been staying aboard the ISS after sending the problem-plagued Starliner capsule back to Earth without them.
After the Starliner issues delayed their return home, Wilmore and Williams were slated to return to Earth in February 2025 aboard a SpaceX Dragon craft as part of a four-person ISS crew swap. NASA sent up a smaller two-person crew, SpaceX Crew-9, in late September to relieve Crew-8 and make room for Williams and Wilmore on the next crew swap with Crew-10.
