The Cybertruck went through a frontal, side-impact and rollover test where it scored 4 stars in the latter and a perfect 5 stars in the rest.
Remember when Elon Musk tried to show off the Cybertruck’s ultra-tough glass at its 2019 launch, only for it to shatter when a metal ball was thrown at it? That moment turned the Cybertruck into a meme, but fast forward to today, and it’s no longer a joke. It has just aced the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests. Scoring an impressive five-star rating for driver safety and four stars for passenger safety, the Cybertruck has proven its toughness where it truly matters. So, let's dive into the details of its crash test result in the next section.
What Is NHTSA?
It stands for National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is a US government agency that sets norms for motor vehicle and road safety standards. It is somewhat equivalent to what the Bharat NCAP is for Indian vehicles, but with more stringent norms. Tesla had their Model X and Model Y tested previously under the NHTSA which also fared out a proud 5 stars for the Musk-led brand.
Tesla Cybertruck Crash Test Detailed
The alien-like truck was put through its paces in a 56 kmph frontal crash test, slamming into a solid barrier to simulate a real-world head-on collision. Despite the brutal impact, the Cybertruck held its ground, with its structure absorbing the force well: showing a peak crush of 445 mm at the front but absolutely no major intrusion into the passenger cabin.
Both driver and passenger airbags deployed correctly, seat belts held the dummies firmly in place, and even after the impact, the doors remained shut yet fully operable. The windshield? Completely intact, no unexpected surprises this time.
The injury risks of head, neck, femur, and chest impact scores stayed well within the safe zone. The truck's battery system was also safe, with no fire hazard or leakage.
Tesla Cybertruck Overview
The Cybertruck features a unique wedge-shaped stainless steel body with a connected LED light bar at the front. It doesn’t have a traditional grille, and its sharp, angular profile gives it an undeniably futuristic look. At the rear, it sports LED taillights and a large retractable cover over the cargo bed. Inside, it maintains its futuristic character with a minimalist dashboard layout and a squared-off steering wheel.
