CAR SHOPPING 2022: Here are new cars, trucks and SUVs from Ford, Honda, Toyota and more
"It’s worth noting that Tesla is the only major automaker to claim 100% domestic production for all cars it sells in the U.S., well above the industry’s roughly 52% average for the 2021 model year," Kelsey Mays, assistant managing editor at Cars.com, told USA TODAY.
Ford, with its factory in Flat Rock, Michigan, wins the No. 2 spot with its Mustang, down from last year, when the Ford Ranger took No. 1, which is now at No. 28. Jeep snatches spot No. 4 with its Jeep Cherokee.
Honda has spots 6, 7, 8 and 9, with its Ridgeline, Odyssey, Pilot and Passport, all made in Lincoln, Alabama. Toyota takes the final spot with its Tundra model made in San Antonio, Texas.
Out of the 344 models on the market in 2021, 90 qualified for this year’s AMI. General Motors had the most on this year's list, with 19 in total. Honda has 13, with the Civic coming in at No. 90. Toyota has 12 and Ford has 11.
This shows that despite the ongoing semiconductor shortage and lack of vehicle inventory, consumer demand is high, especially for American-made vehicles.
"Among the cars up for sale this model year that have the highest American-made credentials, there’s no single formula that tops all the rest. That’s ultimately good for consumers who care about buying American-made, as they have a wide range of vehicle types with high domestic credentials," Mays said.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused consumers to want more and more American-made vehicles.
Research done by Cars.com shows 72% of shoppers consider a car’s U.S. economic impact an important deciding factor in their vehicle purchase, according to Cars.com.
“Even as the pandemic threat begins to wane, a third of respondents in 2021 still say COVID-19 has made them more likely to buy an American-built vehicle. Up from just a quarter of respondents in 2020, 29% this year say that it's ‘unpatriotic; to purchase a non-American-made vehicle,” the car website said in a statement.
