Elon Musk is advocating for the abolition of the European Union (EU), arguing that sovereignty should be returned to member states. This strong stance comes as the billionaire intensifies his conflict with the bloc following the imposition of a significant fine against his social media platform, X.
The owner of X (along with Tesla and SpaceX) is reportedly engaged in a direct confrontation with the EU, accusing Brussels of undermining the sovereignty of individual member nations.
In one of his most recent posts, he explicitly stated that the EU should be dismantled:
“The EU must be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries so that governments can better represent their people,” the tech magnate wrote. In another post, he rhetorically asked, “How much longer until the EU is over?”
The fine against X and the DSA
Musk launched a fierce attack on the European Union after the social media platform X was fined $120 million (or €120 million). According to the European Commission, the primary reason for the penalty was the violation of transparency rules stipulated in the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which imposes heightened obligations on very large online platforms.
A central point of the ruling was the operation of the “Blue Tick” verification on X, which was transformed from a badge of authentic account verification into a paid subscription service. The Commission deemed this change to be misleading for users. Furthermore, it cited deficiencies in the platform’s advertising library transparency and limited access to public data for independent researchers.
Musk called the fine “crazy” and claimed that his reaction would not only target the EU as an institution but also specific officials he alleged were behind the decision.
US officials weigh in
The matter quickly escalated into a geopolitical dispute, drawing sharp reactions from American officials. They characterized the EU’s move as an attack on free speech and on US technology companies.
J.D. Vance stated that the European Union should be defending free expression instead of imposing what he called “excessive sanctions.”
Marco Rubio went further, calling it an “attack on the American people.”
For its part, the European Commission defended its decision, emphasizing that the DSA is not about censorship but about ensuring transparency and user protection. Henna Virkkunen, the Vice-President in charge of the relevant portfolio, stated that the fine relates exclusively to X’s obligations as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP).
