He also caught go-ahead/game-winning scores in Week 1 against the New York Jets and Week 3 against the New England Patriots. But he also missed time with injury and often went quiet in the offense. In six games, he registered less than 20 receiving yards and only once crossed the 60-yard mark.
Missing his rookie year with a foot injury, Austin’s caught 84 passes for 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns over the last three seasons with the Steelers.
Still, at 27 come the start of the 2026 season with plenty of speed and punt-return value, Austin figures to have a market. Where he could end up is unclear. He may not sign immediately but Austin should be paid a mid-sized contract beyond what he was making as a rookie. In a more receiver-friendly offense with a stronger quarterback and coordinator, Austin could better his production, too.
While Austin is looking for greener grass, so are the Steelers. DK Metcalf aside, Pittsburgh is expected to overhaul its wide receiver room. That likely means making aggressive moves in free agency and the NFL Draft. At the NFL Combine, the team held at least a dozen formal interviews with the draft’s top wideouts.
