Dubai, 24 March 2026 — Airtel Africa and SpaceX have announced the successful testing of data and messaging services using Starlink Mobile in Kenya, marking a major step toward enabling satellite-to-mobile connectivity across Airtel Africa’s 14 markets.
The trial was conducted in “no connectivity” zones—remote locations where traditional terrestrial mobile networks have no signal coverage.
In these areas, Starlink Mobile was seamlessly activated, allowing 4G-compatible smartphones to connect directly to a constellation of more than 650 deployed satellites.
During the testing phase, users were able to access light-data services including WhatsApp calls and messaging, map navigation, Facebook Messenger, and even complete financial transactions through the Airtel app.
The service remained stable enough to keep users connected to essential digital services in some of the most remote regions.
Sunil Taldar, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, said the trial marks an important milestone in the company’s connectivity ambitions.
“We are thrilled to move from announcement to actionable steps with our partners at SpaceX,” he said.
“This testing phase in Kenya is a testament to our commitment to expanding global access. By integrating Starlink Mobile’s technology, we are ensuring that our customers remain connected even when they travel beyond our terrestrial network.”
Following the successful pilot in Kenya, Airtel Africa and SpaceX plan to use the findings to support wider deployment across Airtel Africa’s 14-country footprint, subject to regulatory approvals in each market.
The partners also indicated future plans to expand capabilities beyond messaging and light data services, including voice calling and higher-bandwidth connectivity, powered by next-generation Starlink Mobile V2 technology, which is designed to deliver broadband directly to standard mobile phones.
Airtel Africa is a leading provider of telecommunications and mobile money services, with operations in 14 countries across sub-Saharan Africa. Airtel Africa’s integrated offer provides national and international mobile voice and data services as well as mobile money services to 174 million customers.
The company’s strategy is focused on delivering a great customer experience across the entire footprint and increasing digital and financial inclusion to transform lives across Africa, in line with our corporate purpose.
